Liverpool Fans Slam 'Spectacularly Bad' Player Despite Win vs Villarreal
· GiveMeSport
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez failed to impress off the bench in a 4-3 win over Villarreal.
Liverpool fans were less than impressed with the defending on display in their pulsating 4-3 win over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
Andoni Iraola's Reds fell behind following a disastrous Virgil van Dijk error which allowed Georges Mikautadze to pounce and put the visitors ahead in the fourth minute. Sergi Cadona doubled their lead in the 29th minute after more issues at the back for the hosts.
Liverpool bounced back and Alexis Mac Allister netted in the 36th minute before Ronald Araujo equalised in first-half stoppage time. Iraola's men turned the game on its head when Mac Allister bagged himself a brace and Florian Wirtz came off the bench to net in the 68th minute.
The Kop were given a scare late on when Tani Oluwaseyi scored his side's third in the 87th minute. The Spanish outfit failed to find a late equaliser and the Premier League giants held on for all three points at Anfield.
The usually reliable Van Dijk put in his worst performance of the season, lacking the confidence and dominance we've come to expect from the Dutch defender. But he wasn't the only member of Iraola's team to frustrate fans on the night as Joe Gomez disappointed after coming off the bench in the 74th minute.
Gomez replaced Jeremy Jacquet who has given him little to no hope of a starting berth alongside Van Dijk in Iraola's defence. The Englishman struggled and played an unwanted role in Oluwaseyi's goal and did himself no favours trying to earn more game time.
This was just his fifth appearance this season and his bit-part role looks likely to continue, judging by the reactions of fans to his brief outing tonight. There had been speculation over his future in the summer ahead of his contract expiring next year but he stayed put.
Gomez has remained loyal to Liverpool throughout his time with the Reds, even with limited opportunities. With Jacquet already being spoken of as one of the best signings of the season, it feels as though he's battling for his Anfield career.
The verdict of some fans online suggests they are ready to part ways with the 29-year-old. He's won every major trophy on offer and perhaps tonight is the night that supporters are convinced he should be headed for the exit door.
One fan vented their frustrations: "So tired of Joe Gomez, he cant defend at all.
Another hit out at the English defender: "Terrible defending yet again. Gomez is so finished man."
One made a brutal assessment: "Joe Gomez should be sent to the Non league."
Another echoed this: "I never want to see Joe Gomez in a Liverpool shirt again."
One supporter asked: "Why does Joe Gomez still play for this club?"
Another pointed out Gomez's salary: "Gomez should have been sold years ago, reason he is still at LFC now I'd say is lack of interest especially with wages he is on."
One added: "Joe Gomez need to leave at the end of the season."
Gomez has been at Anfield for over a decade after joining the Merseyside club from Charlton Athletic during his youth. He's since made 279 appearances but hasn't managed to ever secure a permanent stay in the starting lineup.
Whether his performance tonight will lead to an exit as those fans demand is uncertain, but the clock is ticking on his current deal. He does provide a versatile profile for Iraola, able to fill in at right-back and left-back if required.
