For much of the past few years, Brahim Diaz has been one of Real Madrid’s most dependable utility men.
Whether deputising on either wing, slotting into the number ten role or offering a spark off the bench, the Moroccan carved out a valuable niche in the squad through his versatility and willingness to do a job wherever asked.
This season, however, the story has been a markedly different one.
Brahim struggling for minutes
As reported by Diario AS , Brahim has endured a difficult stretch, both physically and in terms of his standing in the team.
The attacker has been carrying muscle discomfort for some time now, a niggle that has lingered and shows little sign of easing.
This has not stopped him training normally or made him unavailable, with the player determined to push through rather than step back. If Mourinho needs him, he remains at his disposal.
However, since his standout 79-minute display in the 2-1 win over Inter, in which he assisted Mbappe’s opener and led the team for chances created, Brahim has managed just 22 minutes across five matches.
He did not feature against Atletico, Villarreal or Roma, and his last appearance in a Madrid shirt came back on September 15 against Elche.
With Morocco, it was a different tale. During the international break he wore the number ten for the Atlas Lions, carefully managed around his discomfort, and marked his involvement with a goal against Lesotho in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
What next for Brahim?
That lack of game time has inevitably cast doubt over his immediate future, especially as the attacking picture at the Bernabeu is only becoming more crowded.
Endrick staked a fresh claim with his goal and lively cameo in the Roma comeback, operating from the right flank Brahim has long called home, while Yan Diomande and Arda Guler are also ahead of him in the pecking order.
The one respite is Vinicius Jr’s four-match domestic suspension, which runs until November 21 and could open the door slightly.
Even so, his situation has seen him emerge as a surprise January exit candidate , with AC Milan and Galatasaray among the clubs said to be monitoring him.
For now, Brahim remains committed to fighting for his place, but should his minutes fail to improve, a January exit may not be ruled out it seems.
