De Zerbi Must Show More Faith in Bergvall After Signing New Tottenham Deal
· GiveMeSport
Roberto De Zerbi needs to give Lucas Bergvall more playing time at Tottenham to aid his development.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi needs to start showing more faith in Lucas Bergvall, especially after the game against Everton at the weekend.
Bergvall has managed just one start in the Premier League so far this season and was even given zero minutes against both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
The Swedish midfielder started against Brentford on the opening day but was substituted at half-time, with Spurs succumbing to a 3-0 defeat.
Bergvall then started in their 5-1 victory over Charlton in the Carabao Cup, but has seen his game time incredibly limited since then.
Last season under De Zerbi, Bergvall also struggled for minutes, but with Tottenham enduring a difficult season, he needs to be given more opportunities.
Spurs spent significantly on bringing Sandro Tonali to the club in the summer transfer window, so it's understandable that he's going to play regularly in the middle of the park.
Mateus Fernandes has been playing a little further forward at times this season, meaning there could be a space for Bergvall to slot in.
Over the last couple of games, Rodrigo Bentancur has been deployed in midfield alongside Tonali, but he struggled to live up to expectations.
Against Everton, Bentancur struggled with the physicality and was dribbled past four times during the game, while only winning 43% of his ground duels.
It was recently confirmed that Bergvall has signed a new contract at Tottenham, keeping him tied down until beyond 2031.
Now, De Zerbi needs to back Bergvall in order to help him develop, especially when players in front of him are struggling to perform.
Tottenham are still searching for their first goal of the Premier League season.
Discussing Bergvall signing a new contract, De Zerbi was full of praise for the midfielder.
> "Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments."
Despite that, De Zerbi also hinted that Bergvall might need a bit of time, suggesting that he's not quite there yet in terms of his development.
> "He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better. I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential."
In order for Bergvall to hit the heights expected of him, he's going to need to play regularly. With no European football, he needs to be playing more regularly in the Premier League.
