Aston Villa Progressing in Talks Over New Contract for Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof shows his value at Aston Villa as contract talks progress for the underrated defender.

Aston Villa are in contract talks with Victor Lindelof, which is no surprise given he's one of their most underrated stars.

The signing of Lindelof on a free transfer might have been a little underwhelming when it was confirmed by the club, but in hindsight, it was a smart move.

Villa confirmed the signing of Lindelof towards the end of the 2025 summer transfer window, with the Swedish defender being a free agent following his departure from Manchester United .

The Midlands club also signed Jadon Sancho on loan at the time, with Villa looking as though they were panic buying towards the end of the window.

Villa also signed Harvey Elliott on loan from Liverpool in the final days of that window, and it's safe to say that was a deal that didn't work out.

But one deal that did work out, perhaps surprisingly, was the deal to sign Lindelof on a free transfer.

Lindelof hasn't been a guaranteed starter since joining the club, but when asked to do a job, he's done so.

The former United man has even been deployed in midfield at times, showing his versatility and willingness to help the team wherever possible.

Lindelof produced a man of the match performance against Newcastle United on Saturday evening, helping them defend their 1-0 lead to secure all three points.

Considering Lindelof was signed on a free transfer, it's hard to argue that he's one of Villa's best value signings in recent years.

During a period where there has been plenty of change with players coming and going, Lindelof has been a reliable option for Unai Emery.

According to The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, talks are progressing over a new contract for Lindelof , and it's fully deserved.

Lindelof is undoubtedly one of Villa's most underrated players. The loss of Ezri Konsa to Arsenal would have scared many Villa supporters, but Lindelof is starting to show that he can be a reliable figure at the heart of their defence.

Unai Emery will not be happy with what one of his players did in the dying embers of Aston Villa's game against Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

The form of Lindelof and the fact that Villa are looking to time down to a new contract is a worrying sign for Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Since signing from Southampton, Harwood-Bellis has struggled to make an impact at Villa Park and has even been omitted from the squads regularly.

Harwood-Bellis was in the squad to face Newcastle at the weekend but failed to come off the bench, with Lindelof and Tyrone Mings clearly preferred options.

Pau Torres also came off the bench for Villa in this game, meaning Harwood-Bellis is clearly very far down the pecking order for Emery.
