City lodged an official appeal earlier this month after an independent commission found them guilty of all charges related to breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

Despite being found guilty of 114 charges, City insist they are “innocent of accusations made by the Premier League” and say they have “irrefutable evidence” that the ruling “contains clear material errors, of law, principle, and fact, and is unsafe”.

However, a leading lawyer has told BBC Sport that City face “substantial hurdles” if they are to stand any chance of winning their appeal.

Sources have now informed Football Insider that City will be told their possible sanctions before the 2026-27 Premier League season ends.

Enzo Maresca’s side are currently top of the table after winning all six of their opening fixtures, including a comprehensive 3-0 win away at Liverpool last weekend.

Football Insider have also revealed that Manchester City’s former financial adviser Stefan Borson believes it’s “unlikely” the eight-time Premier League winners will be relegated down to League Two.

The report says City are ‘likely to be relegated to the Championship’ with a hefty points decision ‘still on the table’.

Borson says the sanctions for Manchester City will be “severe”, as expected, if their appeal fails.

Speculation is rife that City could face a 60-point deduction , while a separate report claims European football’s governing body UEFA are also ready to impose a significant punishment on Man City.

"UEFA is reportedly close to announcing that, if Manchester City is found guilty following its appeal, it will be expelled from all European competitions for a period of seven to 10 years,” Colombian journalist Cesar Augusto Londono revealed this week.

> “Under that measure, it would be unable to participate in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. The club was found guilty of 115 financial violations in the first instance."

As things stand, though, it remains the case that no potential sanctions have been officially confirmed by the Premier League or UEFA.

City remain focused on proving their innocence, despite the Premier League’s damning verdict.
